Moving Checklist

Relocating your nest can be a very stressful and busy time. Forgetting things along with all the organisational requirements, can sometimes be overwhelming - But by using our comprehensive checklist this will ensure a well organised and comfortable relocation - allowing the journey to be as stress free as possible.

The decision has been made to relocate – SO LETS BEGIN……

Step one...

  • Decide on an approximate week window for your move date
  • Create an inventory list of items you want to move. Separate moving items into Categories, such as moving, storage, bin, charities and garage sale
  • Put together an itemised list of what you have in your nest- as this is what your quotes are based on (how much space in the truck you require)
  • Attain your moving quotations and ask many questions prior to booking – After all it is your nest they are moving
  • Book your preferred relocation specialist (We won’t let you down)
  • If you are renting, notify your landlord in writing of your intention to vacate and arrange for a property inspection to recoup the bond
  • If you are purchasing, check on settlement times to notify the relocation company
  • Organise storage if required
  • Arrange interim accommodation if needed

Four weeks to go...

  • Organise removalist insurance
  • Back up the files on your computer hard drive Moving to a new city or state?
  • Research the new town for businesses and services you will need-
    • Supermarket
    • General GP
    • Hospital
    • Petrol station
    • Schools
    • Child Care Facilities
    • li>Dentist
    • Vet ETC
  • Pick up your family's dental, school, vet and medical records
  • Arrange Australia Post Mail Redirection to redirect your mail to your new address

Three weeks to go...

  • Decide on a move date
  • Purchase packaging materials including tape, boxes, labels, and a permanent marker
  • If you are not purchasing packing paper – collect newspaper for wrapping fragile items
  • Take unused good to a charity – they are always greatly needed
  • Write on the tape a brief description of what is in the carton
  • Arrange a rubbish removal service or skip if required
  • Arrange a garage sale if required
  • Disassemble outdoor items such as a swing set or cubby house- Keep all screws/bolts/nuts etc together and label the container
  • If necessary, open new bank accounts and other required services such as post office boxes
  • Drain petrol & oil from unused and clean off dirt & grease, to avoid leakage during transportation
  • Start to use up all food in your freezer to prevent wasting it when you move
  • Make a list of items you need for the moving day, so that you don't pack something essential
  • Begin packing rarely used items, such as those stored in your garage or shed
  • Get any critical repairs done to the house or unit

Two weeks to go...

  • Contact your new council or ask your neighbours about practical things like rubbish collection days
  • Notify your friends and family of your move and new address details
  • Return videos, DVDs, library books and any other borrowed items
  • Hold your garage sale
  • Arrange for the disconnection and reconnection of electricity, gas, telephone, internet, pay TV and water
  • Cancel newspapers, cleaning, gardening, pet grooming and other local services
  • Review your home and contents and car insurance
  • Book professional cleaners/carpet layers/pest control if necessary
  • Book pool and garden maintenance
  • If in a multi-story building, book the elevator for use on the move day, and confirm with relocation specialist also
  • Organise/confirm house settlement times and changeover of keys

On week to go...

  • Finalise all the packing; remember to mark boxes with room names
  • Make plans for the big send off – the new journey begins soon!
  • Collect your spare keys for the change over – whether renting or selling/buying
  • Organise some meals for the family /or yourself, especially moving with kids and animals to keep them as comfortable as possible
  • Get a moving day bag/box together for some of the essentials
    • Take away/restaurants (that delivers) brochures/menus
    • Toiletries
    • Clothes
    • Wallet/Purse
    • Documents required for any services or realestate etc
    • Keys
    • Prescription Medicines –Family and beloved pets
    • Tools
    • First Aid –Family and beloved pet
  • Bundle up smaller items, and yard tools
  • Pack a bag/box specific for kitchen essentials
    • Kettle
    • Cutlery
    • Mugs
    • Tea
    • Coffee
    • Snacks (both for the two and 4 legged children)
    • Drinks/water
  • Defrost and clean your fridge and freezer the day before you move

One the day

  • Ensure you are organised - as this will be the big difference between a comfortable nest relocation and stressful move
  • Put aside (in the car or bathroom) the bags/boxes previously packed so that the relocation specialists don’t load it into the truck
  • Unplug all electrical items
  • Turn off all services, including the mains switch and taps
  • Walk around the whole house and yard for one final check
  • Lock all doors and windows
  • The drive to the new nest…………………
  • Delegate where you wish all the items to go. The clearer you are with the unloading, the smoother it is for all – Furniture placement is priority
  • Check the back of truck for yourself before the specialists leave
  • Set up beds and fridge first – they are the necessities and you will sure enjoy the first night a whole lot more
  • Return used packing boxes to the removalist
  • Don't forget to change your address details: Driver licenses, Vehicle and Pet Registrations, etc.
